Disaster Recovery

WHAT IS DISASTER RECOVERY?

IT managers, CEOs and Managing Directors completely miss the relevance associated with Disaster Recovery. Disaster Recovery is a fundamental part of any successful and continuing business but also now the foundation and subject of ISO standards ISO 17799 & ISO 24762. Disaster Recovery is the process of preparing for recovery or continuation of a business and its critical technological infrastructure after a natural or human disaster. Disaster Recovery involves planning with procedures and policies to ensure that an organisation can sustain itself and recover after a disaster with the IT and technology infrastructure being the main focus. Disaster Recovery is considered a subset of Business Continuity planning, this includes planning for non-IT related aspects of a disaster that are still key to a business’ continuation and survival. This includes key personnel, facilities, communication and reputation protection, and should refer to the disaster recovery plan (DRP) for IT related infrastructure recovery / continuity.

WHY IS DISASTER RECOVERY IMPORTANT?

With increased dependence on IT and communications for the continuity of business critical functions, blended with an on demand 24X7 global economy, the significance of protecting an organization's IT infrastructure and core business data in the event of a disruptive situation has become much more of a business trend and priority. Statistics show that of companies suffering a major loss of business data, 43% never reopen, 51% close within two years, and only 6% will survive long-term. CIS is geared towards helping companies recognise this risk, assess how to best work with and counteract that risk, CIS will then help the client to put a technical plan into action to be sure that every possible angle of a disaster and its associated losses can be covered, giving the business the best chance to survive during and after a disaster.
